This room had an existing built-in wardrobe and a small build-in chest of drawers (see images). Our client (Niamh) gave us a free hand with the reconfiguration but we decided once we had produced a few concept sketches. There was no point ripping out all the existing wardrobe carcases since the revised configuration called for wardrobes in the same position.
We created a study area where the old chest of drawers was and created a vanity area where there was an underused full sized wardrobe. Niamh’s daughter was about eight years old when we built these units and she chose the colour scheme with her mum based on some curtain fabric they had purchased. The colour scheme is modern, pretty and fun, we think this will carry the young lady through into her early teens and when she’s ready for a change it can all be redecorated to reflect her new enthusiasms. This is THE significant advantage of a hand-painted finish, you can refresh it, you can change your mind, you can modernise it. A sprayed finish is VERY expensive from the outset and VERY expensive to repair or refresh.
The colour design for this bespoke children’s furniture St Albans was new for us, it proved very difficult, some of the colours required for or five coats to get the correct opacity. You learn something on every job!
We love doing children’s rooms and really want to do more, our working methods lend themselves very well to themes, carved letters, carved characters, etc.
The runner in the chest of drawers are by the Austrian manufacturer Blum. A pair of Blum drawer runners will cost about £40 per pair they are beautifully made and a joy to install and use. We only use Blum hardware and all Blum hardware is guaranteed for life.
