Childs Storage – Islington

Childs Storage – Islington

This storage unit was part of a complete room refurbishment for two boys. The brief was to maximise play space and create storage for all the toys and bit of treasure you would expect an eight-year-old and an ten-year-old to accumulate.

The clients gave us a complete free hand with the initial concept and worked closely with us to hone it down. The influences were Mine-craft and the desert landscapes of Tatwoeen. The storage unit wraps around the boy’s bunk bed, tous and games are accessed by climbing over the unit, hand grips and footholds rea worked in to the design on every surface, we even “designed out” the boy’s bunk bed ladder and integrated bed access into the storage unit. There are reading lights and little cubby holes for books and drinks built into on the inner facing sides of the unit.

This was probably the most complicated thing we have ever designed, It required 16 sheets of birch ply (eye wateringly expensive at about £70 per sheet) but this is off-set by the fact it requires very little finishing and the machined edges of the ply look beautiful. The finish is two coats of clear matt Osmo Oil rubbed down with wire wool.

On our recommendation, the clients invited Joa Studholme of Farrow and Ball to create colour schemes for the whole house (including our furniture). I am so, so excited to have some work coloured by Joa, I’ve been a fan of hers for over ten years now, she has a god given gift for colours and an intimate knowledge of how the F&B range works. Have a look at other rooms in the property to see how Joa has really brought our designs to life…
